This Privacy Policy describes how Dean Huff (“we,” “us,” or “our”) handles the information regarding the use of our mobile applications: 12 Steps AA Companion, 12 Steps Speakers, Simply AA, and AA Big Book App (collectively, the “Applications” or “Apps”).
1. Introduction and Data Controller

We are committed to protecting your privacy. The Applications are designed to operate with minimal data collection and processing. By using the Applications, you acknowledge the practices described in this policy.
2. Information We Collect and Process (GDPR Legal Basis)
The core design of our Applications is to operate without collecting Personal Data (as defined by GDPR) or Personal Information (as defined by CCPA/CPRA) from you.
| Category | Information Collected | Purpose of Collection | Legal Basis (GDPR) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Personal Information | None. We do not collect names, email addresses, phone numbers, or user identifiers. | N/A | N/A |
| Usage/Technical Data | None. We do not collect IP addresses, device models, unique identifiers, crash logs, or analytics. | N/A | N/A |
| Financial Data | None (by us). Where an Application offers paid features, payment processing is handled entirely by the App Store or Google Play. | N/A | N/A |
We do not use advertising SDKs, analytics SDKs, crash-reporting services, or cross-app tracking in any of these Applications.
What We Collect: Exceptions (By Application)
Some permissions or device features apply only to certain Applications.
Camera and Photo Library — 12 Steps AA Companion, 12 Steps Speakers, and Simply AA only
These Applications may request access to your device’s Camera and/or Photo Library for the following, limited purpose:
- Purpose: To allow you to add images to contacts or custom entries that are stored locally within the App.
- Legal Basis (GDPR): Consent. Access is only granted after you explicitly approve the permission prompt on your device. You can withdraw this consent at any time by changing your device’s operating system settings.
Important Note: The photos and images you select are NOT transmitted to us or any third party. They are stored only on your mobile device.
AA Big Book does not request Camera or Photo Library access.
Network Access — AA Big Book (Android)
The Android version of AA Big Book declares Internet and Network State permissions. These are used so the built-in reader (WebView) can display the bundled book content on your device. We do not use these permissions to collect, transmit, or store your personal information. The App does not send your reading activity, notes, bookmarks, or highlights to our servers, because we do not operate servers for this purpose.
AA Big Book does not require you to create an account or sign in.
3. Data That Stays ONLY on Your Device
All user-generated data is stored locally on your mobile device. Depending on the Application, this may include:
- Notes, progress tracking, custom entries, and images you add via the Photo Library (in 12 Steps AA Companion, 12 Steps Speakers, and Simply AA, where those features are available)
- Bookmarks, highlights, named notes, reading position, and display preferences such as theme and font size (in AA Big Book)
This local data is not transmitted to us, and we do not have access to it.
The data is stored for the purpose of providing the service, as requested by you.
You are solely responsible for the security and backup of your device and the local data stored within the Applications.
Optional Device Backup (Android — AA Big Book)
On Android, AA Big Book may allow the operating system to include app data in device backup if you have backup enabled (for example, Google backup). That backup is handled by Google or your device provider, not by us. We do not receive or access that backup.
4. Third-Party Services and Financial Information
In-App Purchases (IAP)
Some Applications offer In-App Purchases (IAP). AA Big Book does not offer in-app purchases in the current versions covered by this policy.
Where In-App Purchases are available in other Applications:
- We do not collect or store any of your financial information (e.g., credit card numbers or banking details).
- All payment processing is handled directly by the App Store (Apple) or Google Play Store (Google).
- Your transaction data is governed by the respective privacy policies and terms of service of Apple (for iOS) or Google (for Android).
Data Sharing and Selling
We do not share, sell, rent, or trade any personal information or data with third parties.
5. Your Rights Under GDPR (European Economic Area Users)
If you are a resident of the European Economic Area (EEA), you have the following rights concerning your data. While we collect virtually no personal data, we provide a mechanism for you to exercise these rights:
- Right to Access: The right to request copies of the Personal Data we hold about you (which will be none).
- Right to Rectification: The right to request that we correct any information you believe is inaccurate.
- Right to Erasure (Right to be Forgotten): The right to request that we delete your Personal Data. Since all user-generated data is stored locally, deleting the App will delete all your local data.
- Right to Restrict Processing: The right to request that we restrict the processing of your Personal Data.
- Right to Object to Processing: The right to object to our processing of your Personal Data.
- Right to Data Portability: The right to request that we transfer the data we have collected to another organization.
- Right to Withdraw Consent: The right to withdraw your consent to Camera/Photo Library access at any time via your device’s settings (where applicable).
You can exercise these rights by contacting us at support@deanhuff.com. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority.
6. Your California Privacy Rights (CCPA/CPRA)
This section applies to California residents. While we do not collect Personal Information as defined under the CCPA/CPRA, we provide this notice to ensure full transparency regarding your rights.
| Consumer Right | Our Practice and Your Mechanism |
|---|---|
| Right to Know | We do not collect categories of Personal Information, Sensitive Personal Information, or commercial information about you. |
| Right to Delete | You can exercise your right to delete by deleting the Applications from your device. This removes all locally stored data. As we do not retain any data, there is nothing for us to delete from our systems. |
| Right to Opt-Out of Sale/Sharing | We do not sell or share your Personal Information. Therefore, no opt-out is necessary. |
| Right to Limit Sensitive PI Use | We do not collect Sensitive Personal Information. |
How to Exercise Your Rights:
Since we do not collect or retain any information that could be used to verify your identity, a formal Verifiable Consumer Request is not applicable. To exercise your rights, you simply delete the Application from your device, or you may contact us at support@deanhuff.com with any questions.
7. Children’s Privacy (COPPA Compliance)
The Applications are intended for users who are 18 years of age or older. We do not knowingly solicit or collect any data from children under the age of 13. If you believe we have inadvertently collected any data from a child under 13, please contact us immediately at support@deanhuff.com.
8. Data Security and Retention
Security: Given that we do not collect or transmit user data to our systems, the primary security of your data relies on the security features of your operating system (iOS/Android).
Retention: Since we do not collect personal data, there is no data for us to retain on our systems. Local data remains on your device until you delete it or uninstall the App.
9. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update our Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page at https://deanhuff.com/privacy/ and updating the “Last Updated” date at the top of this policy.
